Chairs

The famous wooden chairs, known for their sturdiness and their comfort, are manufactured in Phini. Chair making is a difficult job and for this reason only one person is occupied with their construction today, Mr. Charalambos Charalambous.

The craftsman had to tour all around the forest so as to select woods from strawberry trees and golden oaks, parch them and leave them for several months to dry really well, and then use them.

They used no machinery or glue for their manufacture but only age-old tools, a slice bar and an auger and their two hands. The result however was handmade, wooden chairs that lasted for a century.

Today industrial timber is used from beech and after a suitable treatment the chair maker can prepare the traditional [Phiniotikes] chairs of same quality more easily and fast decreasing the overall production of. Á lightly chromatic nuance is applied on the wood in the form of preservative which can remain natural making the chairs durable for a lot of years.
